Tekken 6, PlayStation 3

Namco‘s Tekken 6 was released first – as an arcade game – in 2007, and then later released as an enhanced version on PlayStation 3 and XBox 360, in 2009.

The enhancements are considerable, too. The home version features a single-player campaign/story mode for each playable character (definitely not in the arcade game), various unlockables, and an online versus mode (via PSN and XBox Live) that is probably dead now (I could be wrong though).

Tekken 6 has larger, more interactive environments than in previous Tekken games. You can now destroy walls in some places and reveal new areas to fight in. The game has approximately 40 playable characters, of which 10 are new. It also has a new ‘Rage‘ system that boosts attack power when your health is low.

The story mode can be played by two players simultaneously, or – if you’re playing alone – with an AI companion. The story for each character is told with a mixture of in-engine cut scenes; on-screen text messages, dialogue scenes, and third-person exploration. The environments are really just lanes through which to run and fight enemies, and – rather strangely – you also have to break wooden crates to get access to power-ups… Wooden crates, in a game of this stature? At the end of each section you’ll have a fight with a boss or sub-boss, then more story. And – I believe – that each playable character has a storyline of their own to play.

Tekken 6 on the PlayStation 3 also has “Arcade Mode“, where you play the game just like the original arcade game; “Ghost Battle“, where you fight ghosts of each other; “Vs Battle“, against other human players; “Team Battle“; “Time Attack“; “Survival” and “Practise“.

The game has fabulous graphics and animation, and feels like Tekken, in terms of the controls. Winning promotions is rewarding, and the energy of the fighting action in Tekken 6 is second to none.
