***CANNED GAME***
The Atari 8-Bit version of Commando was developed by Sculptured Software for Data East in 1989, but unfortunately the game was never released. Thankfully a prototype still exists and is available online, which is good because this is one of the best 8-bit ports of Commando around.
This version of Commando also has one or two features that were not seen in the arcade original, like weapons pick-ups that append a dagger and machine gun to the display at the top of the screen, although – if I was being completely honest – I’ve got no idea what they do…
To get this Commando port running you’ll need an Atari XE or an emulation setting that has 256KB of expanded memory. There’s also a hacked 320KB version that features Rob Hubbard‘s famous music from the well-known C64 port.
Commando on the Atari 8-bit is worth finding and playing today still. I reckon that it’s marginally better than the C64 version, and most other 8-bit ports, and it seems to be pretty much complete. It’s easy enough to find with a search engine.
