Ridge Racer 2 is the sequel to the smash hit, Ridge Racer. It was developed by Namco and first released into arcades in 1994.
The gameplay is much like its predecessor, only this time the focus is on multiplayer racing, with up to eight participants allowed in the race, if eight machines are lined-up together – or: if eight machines are connected via LAN.
The graphics are more or less the same as Ridge Racer – at 640×480 resolution – with better texture-mapping than before, but still no third-person car view.
Again: another must-play for race game fans. And – if one day someone manages to get the LAN side of this working in MAME – then it could become an all-time great online racing game.
Namco released a second Ridge Racer sequel in 1995, called Rave Racer, and that one does finally give you a third-person view of the car!
