Ocean Software‘s Match Day is up there with the very worst football games on the Commodore 64. It was first released in 1984, following the original Spectrum version.

While the Spectrum original did NOT play a good game of football, it at least tried to. This conversion doesn’t even know which stadium it’s in… During matches, players only move intermittently. Forget “off-the-ball movement” – you’ll be lucky if anyone in your team is running; never mind getting themselves into good positions to receive passes from.

Graphically, Match Day on the C64 is absolutely terrible, and has the sorriest-looking centre circle I’ve ever seen in a football game… Players disappear and have their distance priorities wrong; there are all kinds of graphical glitches going on.

Unfortunately, it’s the gameplay that is the real problem here. It’s so bad, in fact, that calling Match Day a football game is a contravention of the Trades Description Act.
