Montezuma’s Revenge, Commodore 64

Robert Jaeger‘s classic platform game, Montezuma’s Revenge, was released for the Commodore 64 in 1984, and I believe that Jaeger did the conversion himself, so the game is pretty much identical to the Atari 8-bit original. At least, in terms of presentation.

Playing as Panama Joe, you must explore a dangerous Aztec tomb, looking for treasures, and then making your escape. One thing most newcomers misunderstand about Montezuma’s Revenge is that they assume that the exit lies above… When it actually lies below. Let me explain: to complete the game you must jump into the exit pit in the dark rooms at the bottom of the tomb. The exit pit looks like it should have fire in it, but isn’t burning, and if you jump into it you’ll be transported to the Aztec treasure room. Once inside you have a limited amount of time to grab as much treasure as you can, before you are ejected and taken back to the start to begin again.

It’s not too difficult to experience this closing event in Montezuma’s Revenge, but many do not see it because they don’t perservere with the game. If you’re struggling with it: use quicksaves, or a trainer.

Hokuto Force recently did a nice scene re-release of this, with a cool trainer. Good for re-evaluating this timeless classic!
