Believe it or not, but the Game Boy Color has a version of the laserdisc classic, Dragon’s Lair. Yep, that’s right – the one with Dirk the Darking in it. It was developed by Digital Eclipse and published by Capcom USA, in 2001.
The graphics in this handheld version are surprisingly good, and the designers have made the effort to adapt them as best they could to the Game Boy Color. The animation of Dirk, and all the other characters, is exceptional too. They really stand out from the backgrounds. In fact: overall, the use of colour in this port is outstanding.
Gameplay-wise, this version of Dragon’s Lair sticks fairly closely to the arcade game, and is therefore mostly a frustrating reaction game.
If you’re a Dragon’s Lair fan and have not played this before, then I highly recommend giving it look. If you’ve never played, or seen, Dragon’s Lair before, then you’d be better off playing the arcade original first, before this.
