Adapted by P.A.W. Software, the Amstrad CPC version of The Eidolon is another excellent port of Lucasfilm Games‘ classic cave exploration game. It was first released by Activision in 1986 and could be argued is one of the best games on the Amstrad (although some would disagree).
The Amstrad version of The Eidolon stands up well to the Atari 8-bit and Commodore 64 originals, and it plays almost identically, with simple, easy-to-understand controls and gameplay. That said, The Eidolon is more than capable of befuddling those who can’t be bothered to work out how to play it properly. For those who’re willing to take the time to figure the game out, it is an absorbing and atmospheric adventure with some impressive-looking monsters to beat. Particularly the dragons, which are both iconic in the annals of video game history, and also pretty scary-looking.
Amstrad owners should be pleased with this port of The Eidolon. It plays well and is definitely an asset to the platform. And I’d say that it’s still worth playing nowadays.
