Croc 2, PlayStation

First released for the Sony PlayStation in 1999, and is the sequel to the smash hit Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, Croc 2 is a 3D platform game developed by Argonaut Software and published by Fox Interactive.

In Croc 2 the cute crocodile main character is this time on a mission to rescue his missing parents from a revived Baron Dante. He must also save the inventor Gobbo from the same antagonist.

Croc 2 plays almost identically to the first game: Croc runs, jumps, climbs, swims, swings, whips and smashes his way through a variety of levels, each accessible through doors from a main hub area and each with a specific objective in mind. When you’ve completed a certain number of levels a special marked door is then opened for a boss fight. Beat the boss and the game moves onto a new area.

Features from the first game have been brought over, like jump-smashing boxes; collecting gems; hitting gongs to register re-start points; climbing on mesh ceilings; riding balloons, and rescuing caged Gobbos (small friendly creatures with big eyes).

New features include: triple-jumps; flip jumps; rope-swinging; a shop from where you can buy special ‘jump gummies’, health power-ups, and other items; mine cart rides; trampolines; boat races, and other minigames. Plus more.

A new feature called ‘OmniPlay‘ can be toggled on and off from the game’s pause menu. This allows two players to cooperate to control Croc together, with each player being apportioned a selection of Croc‘s moves and abilities, and both players working together to complete levels.

Graphically, Croc 2 is very colourful and appealing, with jolly music and a simple storyline. But is it as good as the first Croc? Well, that’s a matter of taste, although I have to say that – for some reason – I didn’t enjoy it as much as Croc [one] and I didn’t find the controls and camera system to be quite as compliant as in the first game. Fans of Croc [one] will probably like it, but those who didn’t are unlikely to be swayed by it.

Croc 2 was also released for Windows PCs in 2000, and a 2D version of the game was released for the Game Boy Color in 2001.
