Demon Child Zenki, Game Gear

Known as “Kishin Dōji Zenki” in its native Japan, and translated to both English and Spanish by fans, Demon Child Zenki is based on the anime by Kuroiwa Yoshihiro. It was first released in 1995 by Sega and is a platform game with beat ’em up sections for the boss battles.

In the platform sections you play as either a schoolgirl called Chiaki, or a demon spirit called Zenki, and both have different abilities. When you reach a boss fight, Zenki takes a more powerful form before facing the opponent, and the game turns into a one-on-one fighting game. Whoever manages to reduce their opponent’s health to zero first is the winner.

Graphically, Demon Child Zenki is colourful and well-presented. Gameplay-wise, the platforming sections are slick and satisfying, but the jury is still out on the fighting sections. They’re okay; nothing special, but require patience and careful play to beat.

Overall, though, Demon Child Zenki is a fun enough game on the Game Gear. I’d say that it’s worth a look, if you haven’t played it before.
