Converted to the Atari ST by the author of the original Archimedes version, Jonathan Griffiths, Conqueror is a 3D tank combat game that uses a similar view to David Braben‘s Zarch. In fact, it uses the same graphics routines as Zarch, because Braben gave them to Griffiths.
Conqueror was published by Superior Software Ltd. (in the UK) and Rainbow Arts Software GmbH (in Europe), in 1989.
You zoom around a scrolling isometric landscape, looking for targets and avoiding enemy fire. Visually, Conqueror is excellent, and the tank is much easier to control than the spaceship. That said: Conqueror is a tough game. Your first sorties will all no doubt return negative points scores at the end of the game (because Conqueror likes giving you negative points if you mess up). Getting a positive points score is then something to aim for…
The game can be played in Arcade mode or Strategy mode. In Arcade mode the strategic elements are handled automatically for you.
Conqueror looks and play very similarly to the Archimedes version, only it’s a little slower in terms of frame rate. It’s a decent game on the ST and was also released for the Amiga and for MS-DOS PCs.
