Return of the Jedi, ZX Spectrum

Developed by Consult Computer Systems and published by Domark in 1989, the ZX Spectrum port of Atari‘s Return of the Jedi is an okay attempt to bring the fair-to-middling arcade game to Sinclair‘s diminutive home computer.

In it, you race speeder bikes through the forests of Endor (as Princess Leia); fly the Millennium Falcon through the bowels of the Death Star (as Lando Calrissian), and take a commandeered Imperial Scout Walker for a run through Endor (as Chewbacca). Weirdly, though, there doesn’t seem to be any room for Luke Skywalker, who is the Jedi who is supposedly returning – only, not in this game…

There are some nice renditions of Return of the Jedi musical themes, including the Ewok celebration piece heard at the end of the film (and in the Return of the Jedi arcade game), but both the graphics and the gameplay leave a lot to be desired.

In defence of the developer, the original Return of the Jedi arcade game just isn’t very good, so this port didn’t stand much of a chance out of the gate. But I guess they did about as much as they could with it. It’s not a high point in Spectrum gaming, though.
