I’ve been wanting to add the Intellivision version of Commando for some time now, but every time I tried to play it, I could never get the controls to work properly. Until now…
Thanks to the wonders of BizHawk, I finally managed to emulate the analogue disc controls using the numeric keypad. The fire button (always my main bone of contention with this port) I discovered was the Player 1 “Top” button. To throw grenades, you use the Player 1 Left and Right buttons (they both do the same thing).
It turns out that Commando on the Intellivision is a surprisingly solid port, for the time, and considering the hardware limitations. It features eight different stages; has a decent rendition of the recognisable Commando theme playing during the action, and is pretty challenging*.
*= If I had any beef with the game, it would be that it’s maybe too difficult – especially when trying to storm a base at the end of each level.
Intellivision Commando was developed by Realtime Associates, Inc. and published by INTV Corporation in 1987.
