Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!, NES/Famicom

Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! was developed by Nintendo R&D3 and was first published by Nintendo in 1987. It is considered by many to be one of the greatest boxing video games ever made, with well-animated cartoon-style characters and an intuitive and responsive control system.

You dodge and punch your way through a succession of ever more difficult opponents, until you reach and must fight with Mike himself. Getting to Mike is a tough ask in itself, but beating him is almost impossible unless you know all the cues to dodge his blows.

Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! was a big hit on the NES/Famicom and by the end of 1988 had sold over two million physical copies in North America alone.

After Nintendo‘s likeness deal with Tyson expired in 1990 they replaced him with a fictional boxer, called Mr. Dream, and re-branded the game as “Punch-Out!!“. This is the version of the game that is currently available via Nintendo online services.

The original Mike Tyson version of Punch-Out!! is still popular today, and has even been beaten blindfold by a select number of players. Which is pretty incredible when you think about it.
