Space Invaders, Atari 2600

This conversion of Taito‘s classic arcade game to the Atari VCS/2600 was first released in 1980, and – boy – did it shift some units…

Not only did it quadruple sales of the Atari 2600 by itself, but it also became the first home video game to sell over a million units. In fact: by the end of 1982 it had sold over six million cartridges… That is some performance for a game that – in truth – is only a rough approximation of Space Invaders. You only have to look at the screenshots to see that… If you want to know the actual differences between this conversion and the arcade original, read this wiki.

The Atari 2600 conversion was programmed by American Richard Maurer for Atari, Inc. and was the first officially-licensed port of an arcade game to a home video game system. So this game is responsible for a number of firsts.
