Gremlins Unleashed, Game Boy Color

Developed by Canadian company Planet Interactive Development and published – in Europe only – by Light and Shadow Productions in 2001, Gremlins Unleashed is a platform game based on the first Gremlins film, and in which you can play as either Gizmo the Mogwai, or Stripe the Gremlin.

In Gizmo‘s game you have to collect sunglasses and kill Gremlins by using a camera to flash them. In Stripe‘s game you have to collect all the bottles, and smash all the lightbulbs.

There are occasional minigames – a series of sliding puzzles, and a couple of button-bashing games. Otherwise the gameplay is straightforward platforming and collecting.

Graphically, Gremlins Unleashed is pretty good. The character animation is particularly good. I’m not sure about the backgrounds, though. At least they’re reminiscent of the film…

Mark Cooksey did the music, although – to be honest – there’s nothing special about it. I sat and listened to it for a while, and it wasn’t my cup of tea. Thankfully you can turn it off in the options.

Final note: I’ve seen this game listed as “Gremlins: Unleashed” and “Gremlins: Unleashed!“, neither of which I think are correct. I’ve looked in depth at the box art for this game and nowhere does a “:” (colon) or a “!” (exclamation mark – or exclamation point if you’re in the USA) appear. I just think it’s people hallucinating punctuation…
