OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast, PlayStation 2

Developed by UK-based Sumo Digital, OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast is an enhanced version of Sega‘s OutRun 2 arcade game, with extra tracks, cars and other features.

OutRun 2006 is basically split into two halves – one half being a direct port of the updated OutRun 2 SP arcade game, and the second half being “Coast 2 Coast“, a collection of single and multiplayer modes and challenges that are exclusive to this game.

OutRun 2006 features fifteen new cars, in addition to the ten from OutRun 2 SP, making 25 drivable vehicles in total – the most ever seen in an Out Run game. That said: only two are available from the beginning, so you have to get at it to unlock the rest!

Multiplayer games for up to six players can be set up over a LAN. Online games used to be supported, but not any longer (outside of fan support). There is unfortunately no split-screen multiplayer mode.

OutRun 2006 is a great-looking racing game with impressive presentation. I wouldn’t say that the car handling is the best I’ve ever experienced in an arcade game (it isn’t – at times it left me a bit baffled), but the game is very playable and gives a good feel of exhilaration as you drive.

This is one of those games that you might find in a bargain bin occasionally, for pennies. If you don’t yet own it and it’s inexpensive: buy it. It’s a PlayStation 2 game worth having in the collection. OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast was also released for XBox, Windows and PlayStation Portable.
