Need For Speed: Carbon is the fourth and final Need For Speed game released for the GameCube (after Underground, Underground 2, and Most Wanted). It was again developed by “EA Black Box” and published by Electronic Arts. This time in 2006.
Carbon is about illegal street racing within the fictional city called Palmont City. It expands on previous Need For Speed releases by including pretty much every feature that made them memorable – including police chases.
In Career Mode you must conquer territory from your rivals by beating them in races. You can also use “wingmen” (other drivers – aka “Active Crew Members“), and instruct them to do things for you during races (like block your opponent).
You get to test drive a suitable car during the introductory sequence, then choose which car you want to start your career.
Racing is pretty much exclusively at night, and some courses have cliff faces with inadequate barriers, so it’s possible to crash through one of those, to your doom. But at least it looks nice when that happens…
The “Challenge Series” returns; as does split-screen two-player racing, and “My Cars” (your own personal garage). Car customisation options are probably the most detailed they’ve ever been in the series, and there’s also a feature called “Autosculpt“, which – to be honest – I never used. But it’s meant to automatically change the appearance of your car, depending on how many times you defecated the previous day…
Need For Speed: Carbon was released for Windows, Mac OS X, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox, Xbox 360, GameCube, Wii, Arcade, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, PSP, and Mobile. Although not all at the same time.
Licensed car brands include: Mazda, Chevrolet, Chrystler, Alfa Romeo, Mercedes-Benz, and more.
