Legendary Wings is an arcade game from Capcom, first released in 1986. It uses a loose interpretation of Greek mythology to style its visuals and gameplay.
You begin the game as one of two flying men who shoot their way over some cliffs, only to be swallowed by a mountain. Cut to a side-scrolling platform/action section, with monsters and ladders, and a boss battle at the end.
Graphically, I think that Legendary Wings is not too bad. It does seem to come from a different Capcom to the one that’s known for its brilliant, vibrantly-colourful arcade graphics, though. That said – for 1986 – the 2D pixel art in this is still good in places.
Gameplay-wise… there’s just not much to the game. In fact, Legendary Wings feels a little under-developed. Or maybe it had some features cut, because it seems a bit lacking at times. It’s also ridiculously difficult, and the version I played offered no continues. Not that I wanted any anyway…
I couldn’t seem to get anywhere near the top of the high score table, and lost interest in the game fairly quickly.
Legendary Wings was ported to the NES in 1988. The console version is considerably different to the arcade version, though.
Mallo! Legendary Wings has a special (and controversial) place in my heart!
My gaming world, as a child, was my Atari 2600 with a lot of games — my fater was always generous regarding cartridges for my entertainment.
One day I visited a friend of a friend and, to my surprise, they were playing a different kind of videogame — something called TOP GAME (a Brazilian NES clone) — and running a ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS GAME — a winged warrior flying over huge cliffs, facing dangerous enemies, giant rock faces! Oh my!
This game was the Nes 8-BIT port of Legendary Wings. I was amazed. I spent the next days putting in pencil drawings all the images I had in my memory of Legendary Wings scenes.
The game really captivated me. And if I remember well, it took yet, perhaps, 2 years (or more) to my father give me my first Nintendo.
The magical years of Atari gaming started to become sour, while all my friends started to play Nintendo stuff.
Back to topic — few years ago I decided to play the original arcade Legendary Wings and yes — what a deception, delusion, flop, it was — The game starts nice but is terribly hard. The side view levels have a bad design, the game totally fails! It is only beautiful, the idea is cool… but thanks, no thanks. Ha ha!
OUCH!
