Unfortunately the BBC Micro version of Elite‘s conversion of Commando is an absolute travesty, with terrible graphics and horrible gameplay and the only thing it has in common with the arcade original is the name of the game and the basic scenario.

The title screen proudly displays the coder – Tom Harwood – and the graphic artist (John Nixon), but if I’d have been involved with this port I would’ve hidden my name from mention. Maybe the authors were contracted to have their names on it so they could take the blame?

The Beeb deserved better than this load of old cobblers. On the intro screen it says “developed with the aid of Capcom to produce the closest possible home computer simulation of the original arcade no. 1 hit game…” Which is a complete load of old rubbish if ever I read it!
