Paradroid Redux is a fan-tweaked version of Andrew Braybrook‘s classic Commodore 64 shooter, Paradroid. The Redux version includes bug-fixes, enhancements and additions, and runs faster and smoother than any other Paradroid version that preceded it. It also includes all of the three previous versions of Paradroid in one package.
The plan for Paradroid Redux, according to the official website, was: “1. Fix bugs. 2. Take everything that is good and keep it. 3. Take everything that is bad and see if it can be made good. 4. Very, very carefully implement new ideas.”
From the title screen you can choose either the original version of Paradroid; the Championship Edition, or the Metal Edition.
In-game enhancements include: added game statistics accessible from computer consoles; a radar for droids equipped with one (all class 7-9 droids, except 751. It only works if there are no droids in visual range and player is stationary for two seconds); support for a second fire button (press it while the title screen is shown to start the game in two-button mode. Use the second button to go into transfer mode; the first button for everything else); pressing F7/F8 during the intro sequence selects the start ship from any previously visited ships (this is also saved to disk so you can carry on from your last game); the door to the bridge requires at least a class six droid to open (it doesn’t have to be player droid though); and a built-in cheat mode.
There are scoring fixes and adjustments; droid AI fixes and tweaks, and damage and collision fixes and adjustments. And many other fixes and tweaks. For the full list of changes see the website as linked-to below.
A beta version of Paradroid Redux is available for download from https://paradro.id/. Whether the author(s) of Paradroid Redux add or change anything else remains to be seen, but the version that’s available seems pretty much complete.
Paradroid Redux is THE version of Paradroid to play in this day and age and it is a marvellous tribute to Andrew Braybrook‘s timeless C64 classic.
