Wee Ninja, Atari 8-bit

Wee Ninja is a homebrew scrolling platform game for Atari 8-bit home computers (with 32K of RAM). It was written by Paul Lay and first released by Playsoft in June 2025, to rapturous applause.

The game is an obvious tribute to Nintendo‘s Mario games. In this you play a ninja who can change outfits to enhance his abilities (where have I seen that before?). Yes, Wee Ninja is not very original, but it is well-executed.

Graphically, Wee Ninja is simple, but everything is cute and well-animated and the presentation on the whole is very good.

Gameplay-wise, Wee Ninja is playable and challenging. Jumping around is fun and precise.

The game has 32 levels in total, split into eight different worlds. It can be played in either normal mode or easy mode.

This is the kind of homebrew gaming that nostalgia nerds sell their souls for! Go play Wee Ninja today, and have a big wee… Or piss. Or a small wee… Or whatever*.

*= In this context, “Wee” is a Scottish word, meaning “small“.
