Rygar, Atari Lynx

A port of the 1986 Tecmo arcade game, Rygar on the Atari Lynx is a side-scrolling action game where the hero utilises a thrown shield – called The Diskarmor – to destroy his enemies. Rygar was ported to the Lynx by Haehn Software Productions for NuFX, and published by Atari Corporation in 1990.

The graphics, gameplay and sound are surprisingly close to the arcade game, and I’m not entirely sure if that’s because the Lynx is powerful or because the arcade game is very basic… 🙂

The Lynx version of Rygar has 23 available levels, compared to the 27 in the arcade original. Each level is timed, but you can increase the timer by collecting ‘T’ power ups as you progress.

Rygar‘s Diskarmor is upgradeable, by collecting specific power-ups, and these often spawn behind you as you run, so you have to keep your eyes peeled to not miss them.

Overall, though, Rygar is playable and fun, although I did find the game to be relatively easy – at least initially (later levels do increase in difficulty), and I don’t think there are any variable difficulty levels in the game.

If you fancy a not-too-taxing, nice-feeling run-and-gun fantasy game, then Rygar might fit the bill nicely. It’s a decent game on the Lynx.
