Turbo Sub, Atari Lynx

This 1991 release from Atari Corporation is a conversion of relatively obscure arcade game from 1985, and it is a decent game on the Atari Lynx, with excellent graphics and absorbing gameplay. It was developed for the Lynx by NuFX.

Turbo Sub is a fast-moving first person shooter in which you pilot a futuristic attack submarine and must fight off an alien force attacking the Earth.

You begin skimming along the ocean surface at speed and are quickly attacked from the sky. Tilting upwards, you can blast the aliens and try to avoid their fire. Tilting downwards, you can dive beneath the surface of the water to avoid their shots, and also to engage any aliens who’re attacking underwater.

As you’re zooming around you need to avoid crashing into underwater pillars, and other hazards that will damage you. You must also collect as many purple gems as you can and these become important later.

Eventually you’ll make it to an underwater base and must steer into the entrance to end the level. Once inside you can then spend the gems you’ve collected on extra weaponry and defences.

Turbo Sub features impressive scaling effects and turning handlebars (!) inside the well-drawn cockpit. The colours change every in level, which I like (simple things like colour changes are great for adding variety to a game without a great deal of effort), and this Lynx port also has a two-player link-up mode, which the arcade version doesn’t have.

Overall, Turbo Sub is a fun game, and is arguably a ‘must-own’ game on the Atari Lynx.
