Commando, Amstrad CPC

The Amstrad CPC version of Commando – published by Elite Systems in 1986 – is easy to write off, due to its chunky graphics and mostly featureless backgrounds, but it’s actually one of the better 8-bit conversions.

That said: it’s not what I would call “great”, but it is playable and fun for a while. One thing I did notice was that – unlike most other Commando conversions – the levels keep going on and on. Each area being basically a patchwork of different graphical elements to make it seem like there’s more variation than there actually is.

Commando does seem to be highly rated by the Amstrad gaming community, although – personally – I think that it’s somewhat over-rated by the ‘fans’. It’s a decent enough port, but it’s not that great. System fanatics do tend to over-rate their favourite games and I think that’s the case with Amstrad Commando.
