The 1991 Game Gear version of Paperboy looks and plays somewhat similar to the Sega Master System version, which is no bad thing because the Master System version is one of the best conversions of Paperboy around.
That said, looks can be deceiving and there is one aspect of this port that pretty much ruins it, and that is the way the cyclist throws his newspapers… It’s an unsatisfying and surprising effect that the developers chose and it makes for jarring gameplay. Which is a pity because this could have been up there in the top ten ports of Paperboy, but I think it falls short because of the dodgy throw mechanic.
Game Gear Paperboy is an adequate port at best. It’s a bit disappointing after the stellar Master System conversion by the same people.
