Son of Blagger, Commodore 64

The 1984 sequel to Blagger, Son of Blagger is different to its parent in that this time the platforming is done within a large, scrolling landscape, rather than the Manic Miner-style, single screen stages of the first game. It is basically the same game engine as another Tony Crowther game: Wanted! Monty Mole.

And – like Wanted! Monty MoleSon of Blagger is unforgiving, archaic, and riddled with instant death traps and dead ends with no way out of them other than rage quit.

With some persistence (and maybe prudent use of quicksaves) it is possible to make progress in Son of Blagger. When you collect all the keys in one area, and make it to the finish point, it opens the door to the next zone in the maze. This also acts a waypoint in the game, meaning that if you lose a life from that point on you will at least be able continue from that point in the maze. If you have any lives left…

Son of Blagger is definitely better than the original Blagger, although whether it’s a C64 classic or not is open to debate.
