Land of the Dead: Road To Fiddler’s Green, XBox

This adaptation of George A. Romero‘s 2005 film, Land of the Dead, was developed by Brainbox Games and published by Groove Games.

Road To Fiddler’s Green was released not long after the film came out, and it utterly fails to capture any of the ‘fun’ of the film, or the visual style of it.

It’s a first-person shooter with levels that barely approximate anything seen in the film, so comes off as a rather generic zombie shooter overall. It uses Unreal Engine 2 and has single and multiplayer game modes.

Since the game is subtitled “Road to Fiddler’s Green“, the aim is to fight your way to Fiddler’s Green, one of the last human outposts, as seen in the film. Meaning that the developers could just make up any old shit as they went along… Which is exactly what they did.

You start at a farmhouse, then are chased into the hay bales, and then into the cornfield… It’s like zero thought went into giving this game a good opening, or making it a decent tribute to the film!

The controls are bog-standard console shooter gamepad controls, so reacting to enemies is sluggish. Blowing their heads off is not much fun either. So what’s the point of this game?

Land of the Dead was released for XBox and Windows. Just know that this game does absolutely no service at all to a great filmmaker and his films, and I don’t know what was going behind the scenes, but the developers either didn’t know what they were doing, or there was some other interference going on, because the resulting game is bare minimum effort and hugely disappointing. Even for its time, Land of the Dead: The Road To Fiddler’s Green was a travesty.
