Pocket Bomberman was initially released for the original black and white Game Boy in 1998, and the following year it was re-worked in colour and released as a launch title for the Game Boy Color. Other than the colour enhancements, the game is pretty much identical to the OG Game Boy version, which is no bad thing as it’s an exceptional game.
Pocket Bomberman is basically a platform version of Bomberman, where you can jump around a series of scrolling levels, dropping bombs, and trying to destroy all the enemies, while at the same time trying not to catch yourself in your own explosions.
Dropped bombs are not affected by gravity, so you can drop them in mid-air and even use them as platforms if you need to.
The game takes place over five themed worlds, each with five levels, one of which is a boss battle. Each level has a time limit, which is shown at the bottom of the screen.
There’s also a challenging “Jump” minigame that can be practised from the main menu. There is no multiplayer option in Pocket Bomberman, though.
Pocket Bomberman is fun to play and a nice variation on the Bomberman theme. If you’re a Bomberman fan, or just like unusual platform games, then this is a game still worth playing now.
