Gauntlet, Apple IIgs

The Apple IIgs version of the arcade classic, Gauntlet, was first published by Mindscape in 1988. It’s a reasonable port, although it doesn’t have the variations in colour that most Gauntlet ports have. The levels in this version seem to be mostly the same colour – grey – with spot colours used for doors, items and monsters. Which is disappointing.

This version of Gauntlet actually looks like it is based on the Gremlin/US Gold ports of Gauntlet, because it has the same title screen, font and character selection page as those versions.

Two players can play the game simultaneously, and the action is reasonably compelling. The graphics are chunky; looking more like the Amstrad CPC version than any other (except without the colour), and the sound is mostly sparse effects.

Gauntlet on the Apple IIgs is perfunctory, and nothing special. It’s disappointing more than anything. It could’ve, and maybe should’ve, been better.

  1. Mindscape’s port of Gauntlet and Paperboy were infamous for being (quite literally!) the worst commercial game ever released for the Apple IIGS. It actually used the programming code from the 8-bit Apple IIe version, with graphics from the C64 on top as dressing. The machine was capable of an arcade perfect port, but due to Mindscape’s laziness, it never got one.
