Paperboy 2, Amiga

The Amiga version of Paperboy 2 is pretty much identical to the MS-DOS version, except that the scoring and newspaper count are displayed outside the play area (in the PC version they’re overlaid over the play area), and the water in the game is bluer. The game was first published by Mindscape in 1992.

You play as a either a paperboy or papergirl and must deliver newspapers to subscribers on three different streets over a period of three weeks, from Monday to Sunday. At the end of each day is an assault course that you must race through to reach the end without crashing. If you manage that you get a bonus and then move onto the next day. Missing a subscriber (or damaging their house) will result in them cancelling, and if you lose all your subscribers the game will end.

One crucial difference over the original Paperboy is the fact that you can throw newspapers left or right in the sequel, and this requires use of two different buttons or keys. Since few joysticks supported two separate fire buttons back when this was released means having to use the keyboard to direct thrown papers.

Paperboy 2 seems like a game that could’ve been really good, but in the end it just came out okay. The game is repetitive, and is often frustratingly difficult, with hazards flying at you with little notice. There are at least passwords available that allow you to jump to later levels without having to play from the beginning, but reaching the end of a week is a long and arduous task – one that most players are unlikely to have the patience to complete.
