Shadow of the Beast, Amstrad CPC

The Amstrad CPC version of Shadow of the Beast was developed and published by Gremlin Graphics in 1990 and is similar to the ZX Spectrum version (which was also created by Gremlin), but with more on-screen colours. It requires 128K of RAM to run, so is for Amstrad 6128 machines and compatibles only, and is spread over two floppy disks.

Controlling the player character, Aarbron, is easy enough. He seems to climb ladders slowly, but generally the game does have fairly responsive controls.

The Amstrad port has decent music and is reasonably authentic in terms of structure and puzzles, although the game is missing a lot of detail in comparison to the Amiga original. Unlike the Spectrum version, though, it does have images during the intermission screens.

Overall, Amstrad Shadow of the Beast is playable and absorbing enough for an 8-bit port of a 16-bit game.
