Commando, Apple II

The 1987 Apple II conversion of Capcom‘s Commando was developed by Quicksilver Software, Inc. and published by Data East in North America only, and it is a reasonable port although the play window is probably the smallest out of the all the versions of Commando I’ve played so far.

Graphically, the game is lacking in detail and colour. Gameplay-wise: the controls are responsive enough, which helps, but it can often be difficult to see enemy bullets against the orange dot-based background and the resulting deaths can be frustrating. Clearing an area with the final gate-based enemy rush can also be frustrating as these sometimes seem to go on and on and you wonder how much more you can take.

Overall, though, I wouldn’t really recommend Apple II Commando over the many other, better, Commando ports out there. This version is too plain to warrant attention from most players, other than Apple II fanatics.
