The Adventures of Batman & Robin, Megadrive/Genesis

The Adventures of Batman & Robin is considered to be one of the most technically-impressive games on the Sega Megadrive. It was developed by Clockwork Tortoise, Inc. and published by Sega in 1995.

It’s a two-player simultaneous beat ’em up action game based on the TV series of the same name and featuring the caped crusader (and of course Robin) on a mission to stop Mr. Freeze from freezing Gotham City. To hamper Batman‘s attempts to capture him, Mr. Freeze frees The Joker, Two-Face and The Mad Hatter from Arkham Asylum, and Batman must first defeat them before facing Mr. Freeze.

The game is packed full of amazing pseudo 3D effects (although the graphics are all 2D), and these were all considered “impossible” on the Megadrive at the time. They are in fact quite simple effects that were done to give the game more depth and to enhance the presentation.

If you play the game on your own you can choose to play as either Batman or Robin, but the characters are essentially identical in terms of abilities. Each can use batarangs, bolas, or shuriken in long-range attacks, or use melee attacks for short range. Batman (or Robin) can also hang from overhead ledges, do backflips, and a variety of other fancy moves.

The aim of the game is to basically run from left to right, survive the onslaught of enemies, and reach the end of each stage. In similar style to something like Final Fight, The Adventures of Batman & Robin stops every now and then to throw a bunch of enemies at you, before saying “go!” and letting you move on. At the end of each section there’s a boss battle, which must be completed in order to progress to the next level. Occasionally there’ll also be a shoot ’em up section, where the Bat Plane is used to shoot down enemies over a scrolling landscape.

While The Adventures of Batman & Robin is a superb-looking game on the Sega Megadrive I have to say that I really, really, REALLY f**king hate it… I can’t put into words how annoying the game is… I did not enjoy playing it at all and it drove me absolutely nuts getting these screenshots. I’ll be glad if I never have to see this horrible, unplayable, unfair game again, and if I do see it again I may just have to burn it with fire…
