Antics, ZX Spectrum

This 1983 sequel to Bug-Byte‘s The Birds and the Bees is a simplistic maze game, but with excellent controls as you control a bee (with plenty of inertia), on the lookout for a kidnapped friend (kidnapped by ants, no less).

The aim of Antics is to make your way through the underground maze to find your friend, all the while collecting pollen from flowers to regain your stamina.

Enemy ants must of course be avoided, and secret passages must opened by exploration and touch (ie. touching the correct part of the maze might open up a new path).

Antics might be simple by today’s standards, but the game is also a nice little challenge to anyone willing to take it on, and also beautifully programmed. The ‘feel’ of the main character’s movement is spot on.
