Time Bandit was first released in 1983 for the TRS-80, but is far better known for its 16-bit versions on the Atari ST and Amiga. These were released later, in 1985, and featured vastly improved graphics.
Time Bandit is an overhead maze shooter where one or two players hunt for keys in sixteen different levels, each of which must be completed sixteen times, each time getting progressively harder. The levels vary in character and difficulty, and some feature tributes to popular games of the time, such as Pac-Man and Centipede.
Overall, though, Time Bandit resembles a kind of tribute to Atari’s classic Gauntlet, although Time Bandit was made two years before Gauntlet. The 16-bit versions of Time Bandit were released the same year as the arcade version of Gauntlet (1985).
