Super Street Fighter II Turbo Revival, Game Boy Advance

This exclusive Game Boy Advance remake of Street Fighter II Turbo was first released by Capcom in 2001, and it is arguably the best fighting game on the system.

It features all the revisions made in 1994’s Street Fighter II Turbo, plus a number of other changes made specifically for this release. All of the general portrait art has been re-drawn; digitised voices have been updated (to those from Super Street Fighter II Turbo; except for Akuma whose voice is from Street Fighter Alpha, and Ryu who retains his World Warrior voice); some special moves have been changed (or completely removed), due to the GBA‘s lack of buttons (compared to the six of the arcade version); there’s an option for “Easy Inputs“, which maps special moves and combos to a single button-press; some characters (Ken, Guile and M. Bison) have brand-new stage backgrounds; some have their stages from other Street Fighter II games, and others have been slightly edited or changed in some way; the bonus stages were added back into the game (they were removed from the Turbo arcade version); and certain details from later Street Fighter II games have also been added (like, for example, Vega‘s claw breaking after taking a certain number of combo hits, which has been taken from Street Fighter Alpha 3).

There’s also a training mode; the endings for some of the characters have been changed, and there are new sound effects in places.

The “Super Combo” system has been retained from the arcade version, as has the “Air Combo” system, that allows moves to be performed and chained in mid-air.

The graphics are vibrant and exceptionally well-animated; the sound throughout is great, and the playability is ‘through the roof’, in terms of handheld beat ’em ups. And, of course, two players can fight against each other over a link cable.

Super Street Fighter II Turbo Revival is pretty much a ‘greatest hits’ of the Street Fighter II and Street Fighter Alpha series, and is a must-play game on the Game Boy Advance.
