Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, ZX Spectrum

Based loosely on the satirical (and frankly terrible) 1978 film of the same name, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes is an isometric platform/action game – in the style of Knight Lore – that was first published by Global Software in 1986.

The aim of the game is to explore a series of rooms, collecting bouncing tomatoes, and taking them to crushers to squash them into ketchup… Yes, you read that right. And also to find large, walking tomatoes; stun them, and then push them into holes in the floor to kill them. The latter is your priority objective, if you want to complete the game, and the former (squashing tomatoes into ketchup) is what you need to do to keep your health up, which is represented as a big red tomato at the bottom of the screen. So both are important.

To stun these oversized fruit monsters, you must throw pepper at them. Unfortunately, this pepper is in limited supply, so if you run out of it, you’ve got to find more.

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes looks okay, and plays well enough, but is quite tedious – depending on your tolerance for this type of game. It’s obviously very derivative of Knight Lore, and by the time this came out these types of games were ten-a-penny.

Other than the fact that it’s an official licence of a notorious film, there’s not much else of interest to say about it. Attack of the Killer Tomatoes is a (very) minor cult classic, much like the film it’s based upon.
