Android 2, Amstrad CPC

Converted to the Amstrad CPC by Chris Wood, from the ZX Spectrum original by Costa Panayi, Android 2 is a responsive and playable port, but doesn’t quite match up to the Spectrum version’s level of presentation.

The main issue, really, is the lack of colour variation, due to the four colour restriction of the Amstrad‘s high resolution graphics mode. The fonts are also a bit shonky, and that cursor arrow on the menus is just plain crap.

That said, Android 2 on the Amstrad is still challenging and fun to play. And, you can customise the graphics (to a minor degree), which was not a feature in the original.

There are three different areas where you must hunt down and destroy five ‘Millitoids‘ in each, then head back to your capsule before the timer runs down. The maze is a literal minefield, and hostile robots will also try to take your lives if they touch you.

The Amstrad version of Android 2 was first published by Vortex Software in 1985, and it’s a game still worth playing today. In spite of the limited colour.
