Moon Patrol Redux is a homebrew hack/remake of the Atari 5200 port of Moon Patrol – originally released in 1983, with this ‘Redux‘ version coming out in 2019 via Playsoft.
The game features new, improved backgrounds and sprites; a new title screen; selectable control schemes; a fixed PAL mode; new colours, bug fixes, and more.
Anyone who’s played the original Atari 5200 Moon Patrol will immediately notice the improvements – particularly to the title screen, and to the actual moon buggy itself, which looks better than the distorted mess of the original.
Gameplay improvements include the introduction of mines, a rocket car, sloping hills with rolling boulders, and more challenging gameplay overall.
It’s great to see the Atari 5200 getting some love from homebrew coders, and Moon Patrol Redux is an excellent remake of a fairly average game, taking it to well above average on the under-appreciated 5200.
