An original C16/Plus4 release from Players Software, first published in 1987, Auto Zone is a side-scrolling, car-driving platform game where you drive a small buggy from right to left across four different stages, trying to survive to the end.
It’s a very challenging game with lots of seemingly impossible jumps to be made, all of which are possible due to the fact that your car has two speeds – fast and slow. Some sections require you to be driving fast, others slow, and knowing what to do is a matter of quick reactions, memorising layouts, and pure gut instinct.
Like a lot of older video games, Auto Zone isn’t particularly fair, but it is enjoyable enough to make some progress in. Graphically it’s quite nice, and the scrolling is fast and smooth enough to keep you transfixed on the play.
Overall, Auto Zone is a highlight on the Commodore 16 and is an excellent game considering that it squeezes into only 16K of RAM.
