The Commodore 64 version of A&F‘s Chuckie Egg retains the style and structure of the ZX Spectrum original‘s platforms and ladders, but goes for a chunky Henhouse Harry character sprite. Like in the Atari 800 version: the oversized Harry looks a bit ridiculous, but moves around well enough.
Commodore 64 Chuckie Egg can be played at one of six different difficulty levels, which is unique to this version and isn’t in the original. The highest difficulty level even gives you a warning before playing. All increasing the difficulty does, though, is speed things up. It speeds the birds up; it speeds you up; and it speeds the timer up. Playing on difficulty level three (“The way it should be played”) I thought was slightly too easy, but still very enjoyable to play.
Other than a slight change in the on-screen colours used, and the aforementioned ‘chunky’ Harry sprite and difficulty levels, this is pretty much identical to the original. It certainly feels right in terms of controls, game speed, and accuracy. Which is a blessed relief, considering that some Chuckie Egg conversions are just plain awful.
