Never officially released in English-speaking territories (but translated by fans as “Psychic Killer Taromaru“) this side-scrolling action game is one of the rarest Sega Saturn titles in existence.
Rare because publisher Time Warner Interactive only produced a very limited number of copies of the game in 1997, before pulling out of the games market altogether. So actual copies of Shinrei Jusatsushi Tarōmaru have changed hands for silly money over the decades.
Thankfully, though, we have alternative means of playing this game now, rather than having to fork out for an actual disc. Emulation saves the day…
Shinrei Jusatsushi Tarōmaru is a decent mixture of fighting game and shooter, set in Feudal Japan, and featuring two lead characters (both ninjas) who are each agile and deadly. The game can be played simultaneous two-player or single-player and is basically a slug-fest through waves of enemies and bosses. It’s beautifully presented and a lot of fun to play, with spectacular explosions, over-the-top sequences and plenty of supernatural weirdness.
