Converted by German developer Factor 5, International Superstar Soccer Deluxe on the Megadrive is a close port of the Super Nintendo version. Meaning that it’s great fun to play, with or without other players.
It was first released in 1996 by Konami.
Graphically, the port is almost identical, barring a slight tweak in colour palette. Gameplay-wise, it seems the same as the SNES version to me, and can be played by either one or two players.
There are six different game modes; eight different strategies to employ, and sixteen different formations to choose from. ISS Deluxe features 39 national sides, although player names are not licensed, and are generic surnames only. This doesn’t affect the game, though.
Before modern football games, ISS on the 16-bit consoles was about as much fun as football games got. It played better than FIFA, and was more exciting than Sensible Soccer. IMHO. I have great memories of playing this game on these consoles!
