Street Fighter II, Super Game Boy

When the 1995 Game Boy Street Fighter II cartridge is plugged into a Super Game Boy, a number of enhancements are featured.

Every fighter in the game (all nine of them) has their own graphical border, and these appear to be background elements from the SNES version of Street Fighter II. Overall, they look very good, and even fade in and out as the fighters change.

Pressing the ‘X’ button also switches the colour of the game background between black and dark blue, and while this may be a minor enhancement, it does add variety to the look of the game when you combine it with SGB palette swaps.

And, finally, the two-player versus mode is now easily accessible by using two Super Nintendo gamepads. No need for a link cable; no need for two Game Boys, and no need for two copies of the game.

That said, playing the Game Boy version of Street Fighter II on a SNES is a bit weird, considering that the console has some of the best versions of the game available natively.
