Now here’s a bizarre one from the dim and distant past… Uncle Poo, created by Diatec in 1983, is a weird old vertical screen game in which you play an old man who collects gems and money from a maze that is patrolled by monsters, and is slowly being flooded by water.
You of course must avoid both the monsters and the water, but Uncle Poo‘s trump card (pun intended) is his unique ability to fart at monsters to knock them out… Yes, you read that right.
To squeeze out an air biscuit Uncle Poo must turn his back on either the monsters, or any of the destroyable blocks in the maze, and let loose a bubble in their direction. If one of his bottom bubbles hits a monster it will kill it and award you some bonus points.
Collecting certain loot items will clear parts of the maze of blocks, making it easier to get around. Some treasures are located down paths that risk Uncle Poo being caught by the floodwater, so you have to be careful when it comes to collecting loot. There is, however, a run button which allows Uncle Poo to increase his speed until his “PWR” runs down (shown at the bottom of the screen).
After every two levels there’s a challenge stage where Uncle Poo has to fart at enemies running around the screen while he stays in the middle. The key to this minigame is to remember to face away from the direction you want to fart in, because it’s Uncle Poo‘s butt that is his weapon…
While Uncle Poo is certainly not a bad game and does have a certain charm to it, it’s certainly no “hidden gem”. It’s a game that could be worth pulling out during a party to amuse those who’ve never seen it before, and it does have a two player mode but it’s not simultaneous.
While I’m not one hundred percent sure about this, Uncle Poo could well be the very first video game to actively feature farting as a game mechanic. If anyone knows of any other game that trumps this (pun again intended), then please let me know in the comments below.
