Hudson Hawk, ZX Spectrum

Based on the 1991 action/comedy film by Michael Lehmann (Heathers and Meet The Applegates), and starring Bruce Willis, Hudson Hawk on the Spectrum is a rare beast indeed. It is a game that is better than the film it is based upon…

Unlike the film, Hudson Hawk on the Spectrum was very well-received when it was initially released. It’s a platform game (of course), which sees you playing as Hudson Hawk himself – the master cat-burglar – and attempting to make your way through various levels based on locations from the film.

Graphically, Hudson Hawk on the Spectrum is decent, but the play window is too small IMHO (and the surrounding border is therefore too large). The game, I think, would have looked much more impressive if it used the Spectrum‘s full screen. But it would no doubt have been too slow to be playable. So the trade-off is the smaller play area.

Ocean Software published versions of Hudson Hawk for the Spectrum, C64, Amstrad CPC, Amiga and Atari ST, close to the film’s initial release in 1991.
