Out Run, Game Gear

The 1991 Game Gear port of Sega‘s classic arcade racer, Out Run, was converted by Sanritsu Denki Co., Ltd. and features “Versus Computer” and “Versus Human” gameplay modes.

Before starting, you can choose between the three famous Out Run tunes (Magical Sound Shower, Passing Breeze and Splash Wave), and automatic or manual transmission, and then your path through the game is determined by whether you take the left or right roads at the various splits.

The road effect is good, but not great, and the sprite scaling is a little jerky. The handling of the car, though, is good enough to make this a playable and enjoyable handheld version of Out Run.

Overall, this is a decent port to Sega‘s 8-bit Game Gear and is still worth playing today. Just don’t expect the full arcade experience, though.
