Killer Watt, Commodore 64

Published in 1984 by Alligata Software, Killer Watt is a single-player, side-scrolling shoot ’em up where you fly around a cave blasting light bulbs. It was designed and programmed by Tony Crowther.

You avoid the walls; you shoot the enemies; you shoot the light bulbs… You reach a room at the end where you shoot a switch on the wall to complete the level. It’s very simple stuff.

Choosing any one of the five available difficulty levels doesn’t change the level layout, it simply adds more (and different types of) enemies, and changes the background colour. In fact: I couldn’t find evidence that there was any more than a single cave to fly around in in Killer Watt, which is a pity because the game sorely needs more.

With a bit more variety – and maybe some inertia on the craft you’re flying – Killer Watt might have been something special. As it stands, it’s just alright.
