Choplifter III, Game Boy

Choplifter III on the Game Boy was developed by Teeny Weeny Games and published in the UK only by Ocean Software in 1994. It is essentially a straight port of the Game Gear version – except without the colour.

One thing I did notice in the Game Boy version of Choplifter III that I played was that the levels seemed to play out differently to the Game Gear version. Instead of being sequenced 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 2-1, et cetera, the levels were ordered 1-1, 2-1, 3-1, 4-1, 1-2, 2-2, and so on… This I thought was good, in the sense that it gave more variety to the passage of the game, but I did wonder if the copy of the game I was playing was somehow corrupted. The reason for that was that the letters on the name entry on the high score table were not right; replacing some letters with numbers… Otherwise, the game seemed fine.

Choplifter III on the Game Boy is maybe a touch too close to Choplifter II, in terms of presentation and level design. The first levels in the opening two sectors I thought were very similar – if not identical – to the first levels in the opening two sectors of Choplifter II. In fact, they were so close that I did wonder if Choplifter III was actually a re-hash of Choplifter II, but subsequent sectors were closer to those seen in the Game Gear version of Choplifter III. I found it a bit confusing, to be honest…

Overall, the Game Boy version of Choplifter III is a playable enough game to warrant playing nowadays, although the Game Gear version has the advantage of being in colour.
