Konami‘s 1982 cult hit Time Pilot is a multi-directional shoot ’em up with you piloting a plane through various time zones.

You basically blast the enemy and dodge their bullets, and take out the ‘boss’ aircraft at the end of the level. You can earn bonus points by rescuing (flying into) the parachuting pilots too.

Time Pilot is a simple game, but it did blaze a trail for multi-directional shooters, so is worth mentioning from that point of view. An early ‘bullet hell’ video game.
